Work-study program
Students who have limited funds and are eager to participate in SSC should consider applying for one of our work-study spots. The program is focused on mentorship and is only available to students who demonstrate financial need. Work-study students pay $25 per week and must commit to a minimum of five classes over the three weeks. They must also be available for additional hours working with our faculty and mentoring younger students in their communities.
We have found that students learn a tremendous amount from teaching others. Under the guidance of SSC Director Daniela Pierson, work-study participants will learn to create lesson plans and coach younger players. In the process, they will improve their own mastery of the skills and develop a deep understanding of their value to our community.
Work-study application details
There are six work-study spots available for 2020. Students do not need to be advanced instrumentalists, but they need to demonstrate their willingness to practice consistently and share what they learn in the classes with other students.
To apply for one of the work-study spots: using the application page below, note which classes you would be interested in, and in the space for the YouTube links, please upload three videos:
1) you playing your current repertoire (per the guidelines on the application);
2) you teaching someone in your family something that you enjoy on the violin. It can be you explaining how to read notes or rhythms or maybe you teaching them to play something simple. We’re not expecting you to be an expert teacher! What we want to see is how you watch them learn (8- 10 minutes);
3) a short video of you talking about what you noticed in both yourself and your family member in that session (3-5 minutes)
Work study application steps:
Fill out the below application and indicate seven classes that you are able to take over the three weeks. If you are accepted for one of the work-study spots we will assign you to five of those seven. You will need to send us a copy of 2019 tax return and/or proof of income. We will be careful with your records but just to be safe please cross out your social security number before emailing us your forms.
Submit by 25 May 2020
Results are sent out the week of 1 June 2020 and if you are accepted you will have three days to confirm your spot.
